Your canvas protects your boat. Sunbrella and other canvas materials do wonders to keep your boat dry and protect it from the sun. But eventually the material is going to begin to wear. It gets dirty from the wind and rain. And you will notice water leaking through your canvas.
There are ways to extend the life of your canvas and regain the water proofing protection.
1. First, clean it! And not just spray it with the hose occasionally to remove bird droppings. At least once a year remove the canvas, use a mild cleaner on both sides and rinse well. We recommend Woolite - yes, your canvas should be considered a "delicate"! If you notice mold or mildew, use an appropriate cleaner to remove the stains.
2. Let the canvas dry fully before putting it back on the boat.
3. Now you're not done yet! You've got clean canvas - a clean slate and it needs some help - waterproofing. There are several waterproofing products available. Marine Outfitters recommends 303 Waterproofing. We feel this product works the best - but any brand of waterproofing is better than none. Follow the directions on the product. A light mist over all of the canvas will do wonders.
Don't forget about the zippers. Boat supply stores sell various types of lubricant to put on the zippers to keep them from sticking. Zippers are just as important as the canvas to keep your boat clean and dry.
And finally, the snaps on your canvas. Without working snaps, your canvas isn't going to be able to protect your boat. Replace any snaps that are worn or missing. Or if a snap has torn out of your canvas, be sure to get it repaired.
